Boro Katra (Pride of old Dhaka)

Boro Katra (in old Dhaka ), a caravanserai built in 1664 when Dhaka was the capital. Boro Katra is an important architectural view of Dhaka city. It is situated to the south of Chawk Bazar close to the bank of the river BURIGANGA. The Boro Katra was highly fortified and was embellished with all the features of the imperial Mughal style.

The Boro Katra contains two inscriptions in Persian: one records that it was built in 1053 AH (1643-44 AD) and the other contains the date 1055 AH (1645-46 AD) and confirms that SHAH SHUJA gave the building to Mir Abul Qasim to be used as a Katra on the condition that the officials in charge of the endowments (waqf) should not take any rent from any deserving person alighting therein.
The building is now used as dormitory for the Madrasa students. Most of its rooms have been changed from its original pattern, bricks are exposed, the whole building in a pale look. Nevertheless, the surviving structure stands as one of the most important monuments of Bengal.
Now this giant building is no more count as a tourist place. But, if you ignore this building from your list of visit, then sure you will be a loser. Though it is a dormitory, but Madrasa authority generally gives permission to have a visit in it.
